[ORRando] Nighttime 200k perm

The past two years I've organized a night-start winter solstice 200K permanent. We've had 8-10 riders each year. Both years we used Ken Mattina's Lunch at Nick's permanent. Mostly low traffic roads, reasonably serviced (24 hour Chevron in North Plains on both the out and the back). Fairly flat. Starts in Multnomah Village. We did a 6pm start with late night (read:11:30pm) dinner at Hotel Oregon in McMinnville which is open until 1am or so. Breakfast at Fat City Cafe in Multnomah Village when finished.

In 2011, a month or so before PBP, a group of us used the Hillsboro-Dallas 200K perm as a shakedown. We started that one at 9pm. Low traffic route (you are immediately out of the urban growth boundary). not overly hilly save for some bumps down by Dallas. There's a Center Market in Dayton that is open almost 24 hours which is a good "halfway" point between Hillsboro & Dallas on both the out and the back. I don't know if the Safeway in Dallas is open 24 hours, but there's an off-course Center Market there as well. Will add a mile or so to the route if you have to use it.

Hope this helps.

Depending on when you ride and how fast you are, you could probably persuade someone here to ride with you. :-) Always more fun riding at night with company.

Subject: [ORRando] Nighttime 200k perm

I want to see how my body reacts to lack of sleep and get used to new lighting gear before I do the >300km brevets. Can anyone suggest a good night start ~200k route (permanent or otherwise) near Portland, something safe-ish to do solo at night for someone (read: me) without a ton of night riding experience?
