Ray,

My son and I use chocolate SPIZ. We did the 400k last
weekend mostly on SPIZ with some shots, some
miscellaneous energy bars, bananas, and two fried
chicken strips each from Thriftway in Sweet Home. We
had two water bottles each on the bike and brought
along enough powder for five more water bottles. I
think I should have brought along enough powder for 6
or 7 more bottles but we made it with what we had and
bought a bottle of Gatoraide in Independence to make
sure we had enough to drink to make it to Newburg.

I too have suffered from stomach problems during a
long ride. I had some very mild discomfort at times
during the 400k, but I don't attribute it to the SPIZ.
I've also done team Race Across Oregon twice mostly
on SPIZ with no big stomach problems.

What I like about SPIZ is the chocolate flavor is a
lot like chocolate milk and the fact that 4 scoops in
a 24 ounce bottle of water is easy to drink and
delivers over 500 calories and 600 mgs of salt. So
you can down water, salt, and calories easily and
consistantly at the same time while riding.

What I don't like about SPIZ is it does not fully
disolve and stay suspended in water. Every time I
take a drink from the bottle I need to shake it to get
the precipitated SPIZ from the bottom of the bottle
mixed back in. The problem is this precludes using a
hydration system like a Camelbak or Platypus water bag
that I cannot shake up to re-mix the SPIZ while
riding.

I also have a container of Perpetuum at home that I
got from Hammer Nutrition as a sponsor of Race Across
Oregon. I confess I haven't tried the Perpetuum yet,
but many people seem to think it is as good or better
than SPIZ. I just need to do a couple of centuries
some time this summer on Perpetuum before I rely on it
for something like a 400k.
