A sincere thank you to the five fine folks who contacted me off list to throw their hats into the volunteer ring.

I can still use at least 5 more volunteers (and would never turn away more!) so here are some ideas for folks you can forward my email on to, who might be interested in volunteering:

Rider spouses, partners, parents, siblings & (adult) children: Yes, they think you are a little nuts. They've heard about this "rando" thing you do while sensible folks are sleeping or watching football. Now you can show them how nuts you first hand are by persuading them to stay up half the night making coffee and oatmeal for you and 100 of your closest nutter friends.

The Rando-curious: we all know at least one of these folks. You know, the ones that say "I could never rider more than xx miles", but yet love to hear your stories about bad decisions made in questionable weather at oh-dark-thirty in East Backwater County. Now's their chance to see the action up close and personal.

Your non-ultra-cyclist, yet outdoorsy/athletic friends: Runners, triathletes, backpackers, kayakers.... Sure. they may not be interested in cycling, but all athletes can appreciate the effort it takes to do something you love, overcoming great challenges towards a lofty goal. And most of them have benefitted from volunteers at their own events, who "make the magic happen" (as Asta said so perfectly) to support them towards their own athletic achievements. Who knows, maybe one of them might even move into the "rando-curious" category after volunteering for C1200!

I'm sure there are more... Be creative and forward this email with abandon!

Please ask anyone interested in volunteering at the first overnight to contact me offlist. (For all other volunteer opportunities, please contact Peter Beeson). And again, thank you for helping to make C1200 a grand success!

Susan

Subject: [SIR] Call for Volunteers - Cascade 1200

All,

I have volunteered to be the Control Captain for the first overnight of the Cascade 1200. Although the route has not yet been finalized, it is expected that the first overnight will be in Carson, WA (well, more technically, Stevenson WA).

The control will be open from roughly 5pm Saturday, June 21st to 6am Sunday, June 22nd. With setup and break down, we'll be needing volunteers from midday Saturday to midday Sunday.

If you live in Oregon or Southwest Washington and are interested in volunteering at the first overnight control, please contact me OFFLIST. I already have 5-6 definitely-maybe volunteers, but could easily use 10 more so that we don't all run ourselves ragged.

When responding, please let me know your hours of availability (extra bonus points for pulling an overnighter). I'm working on setting up scheduling and assignments.

Also, if you are Portland-local, and have any interest in helping with some food prep and/or shopping in the couple days leading up to the event (we will be preparing some foods ahead of time to minimize the craziness the day of the actual event), please let me know that as well.

I believe Peter Beeson is the volunteer coordinator for the rest of the event, so if you can't help out at Carson but still want to be involved, please contact Peter directly.

MANY THANKS for your consideration. It's because of volunteers like YOU that SIR can run such a first rate event. If I can answer any questions about Carson, please don't hesitate to ask.

Susan

(BTW, should weather be a factor, the alternate first overnight is Naches, WA. If Carson if too far for you to travel, but Naches is convenient, please let me know and I'll add you to the list of interested parties for that location.)
