I was introduced to caffeine gum this past spring (by Deb Banks), while on
a 600K. Unlike pills, the chewing also keeps me more alert.

Best to try caffeine pills on a non-critical ride. I can tolerate one a
> day; two is bad news. If you think you might need caffeine late in a ride
