I would second David's opinion on the detour.  I had the tandem over the
route 3 weeks ago.  The detour is fantastic and only adds to this beautiful
ride!

   As does my Portland/Pacific City 160.

   But the highway detour is *fantastic* -- If you're going west,
it takes you up to Sheridan Peak (~3 miles to go up ~1000 feet)
and then there are 13 miles of well-paved fast curvy descent through
unlogged wilderness that takes you probably 2400 feet down to
rejoin the Nestucca River Road on the other side of the bridge
work (and gravel section.  Oh well!)

   It's five bonus miles that are not to be missed.
