When I did brevets (sigh) I became a big believer in the Petzl Duo headlamp as recommended by Bill Bryant. Saved me a couple of times, especially one really bad foggy night where I could shine the Petzl on the edge of the road and follow it. Also, you can point the petzl and see "down" the road on descents and "around" corners on curves.

The Cateye EL-500 is a good low-cost, high output light. I see some riders use two of them and they're done with it. I bought two for the price of one on Performancebike.com last year. You might check their current sale for a deal.

As a longterm cycle-commuter but novice randonneur i'm looking for affordable lighting solutions for winter night riding and for future brevet use. I dont have the funds for a high end generator set up so I'm wondering what might be available on the commercial market which would provide adequate illuation and bulb/battery efficiency?

Also, what types of recommendations to people have for reflective vests?
