[ORRando] Recreational bikeability of Newberg, OR

Hello Oregon Randonneurs,

I'm writing to see if you can help me with a geography decision related to
bicycling livability.

I'm looking to possibly move to Newberg, OR but want to get a sense of the
road bicycling in the area. I've lived in NY and CA and while cyclists
aren't always welcomed on the roads (NY) there is generally infrastructure
to support the sport; 10ft snow shoulders make excellent bike lanes.

I drove the roads this weekend and noticed a marked contrast between
Newberg and other cities/towns in OR I've visited; the lack of shoulders on
most country roads, even the new ones. Eugene had them on new roads
(presumably for bikes) as did Bend (bikes and snow).

I noticed that you ran a brevet, the Grab Bag 300, out of Newberg and
wanted to get your take on how safe the back roads of Newberg were. I'm an
experienced rider, but I could see how riding those roads could be sketchy
with the blind rises, sharp turns and narrow roadways.

Thanks much for any help,
Sean
