Hi!
In addition to/instead of the usual array of electronic sports tracking
programs of an individuals participation in such activities as swimming,
running, cycling, some folks might want to consider joining and tracking
their cycling mileage through one of the following two programs (if you use
Strava, RidewithGPS, etc, then it is easy to download your mileage):
Canadian Kilometer Achievers Program (CKAP) http://www.ckap.ca/
· one small life-time membership fee (although membership is targeted
at Canadians, members can be (and are) from all points on the globe)
· many BC Randonneurs are already members of this program (mileage
accumulated from brevets can be included in ones annual submission to CKAP)
· honour system of tracking every kilometer one cycles
· submit calendar year mileage at the end of each year (tallied
weekly or monthly) join now and you can submit your 2014 mileage; and if
you are 50 or over, you can include mileages for two years back prior to the
current year -)Only km from January first, of the year that you join CKAP
count. New members joining CKAP over the age of 50, will be allowed to count
an extra two years, if they provide a cycling log for those years.
· individual and cycling group awards (create your own group; use an
existing group/club, e.g. BC Randonneurs Cycling Club BC Randonneurs
Cycling Club has topped the accumulated annual mileage for 10 years in a row
· it is amazing how much mileage folks can accumulate over a
life-time - Victoria Wednesday Morning Coffee Ride cyclist, Ken Ross, (an
original CKAP member and top amateur Ontario racer in his prime) has
accumulated the 4th most life-time CKAP mileage (402,968 kms.); BC
Randonneur, Henry Berkenbos, is right behind him with 370, 955 kms; Top
life-time mileage participant is Woody Graham, USA, another original CKAP
member, randonneur and adventure cyclist with a total of 875,236 kms.
Year-Rounder Program of the UltraMarathon Cycling Association (UMCA)
http://ultracycling.com/sections/competitions/year_rounder/
· must be a member of the UMCA, plus there is a small annual fee to
enroll in the Year-Rounder Program
· organized by UMCA & RUSA randonneur, John Lee Ellis, (organizer of
the classic Colorado Last Chance 1200 and the Colorado High Country 1200
· fits nicely with using brevets or your personal rides minimum
trip distance is 161 km/100 miles which must be verified by: officially
posted event results; gps tracking devices; or, a printed UMCA Year-Rounder
verification form
· Year-Rounder program is open to anyone on the globe there are
currently 109 participants, including 5 Canadians
http://ultracycling.com/sections/standings/year_rounder.php?year=2014
o Canadian Year Rounder participants:
§ Peter Leiss (Ontario Randonneurs) - 2014 total to date 436
miles
§ Vaune Davis (Ontario Randonneurs 2014 total to date 3120
miles (Vaune completed her 1st successful 1200k at the BC Rocky Mountain
1200)
§ Tone Zaremba (Alberta Randonneurs?) 2014 total to date - 3774 miles
§ Barry Chase (BC Randonneurs) - 2014 total to date
4303 miles in a tight race chasing down Andy Christensen USA(4358
miles): and, being chased by Remek Siudzinski Poland (4228 miles)
§ Ken Bonner (BC Randonneurs) - 2014 total to date
10331 miles
o Top mileage participant to date and for the past few years, Gary
Gottlieb, USA, 13691 miles
o Participant with the least amount of mileage to date, Stephan Schulze,
Germany, 99 miles (note: USA participant, Andre Goertz, is recorded with a
total to date of 52 miles, but the details show that he has just recently
submitted a large number of rides)
Both of these cycling incentive programs help me stay motivated when the
weather outside is less than desireable. I am aware of one local Victoria
cyclist who has accumulated an annual cycling mileage total of approximately
16,000 km just commuting in an out of Victoria!
Happy riding
Ken
