"Silverton to Stayton Rails to Trails

The railroad between Silverton and Stayton is only weeks away from being abandoned. After
the application to abandon the line is filed with the Surface Transportation Board, the public
has only a few weeks to file an application with the STB to let them know of the intent to
convert the railroad right of way to a trail.

The application should come from a public agency such as Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. The OPRD manages several rails to trails in Oregon. Rocky Houston, state trails coordinator, said that he needs to see a large, grassroots effort in support of the trail in order to make this a priority for OPRD.

This trail system could be the beginning of 15+ miles of scenic pedestrian trails that runners and bikers could use and enjoy for generations to come. If this opportunity is missed it would be impossible to replace.

How can you help?
Send an email or call the following individuals (sample email below)
Rocky Houston, OPRD trails coordinator, email: rocky.houston at state.or.us; or call 503 986-0750 to leave a message.

Steve Kay, Recreation Grants and Community Programs Manager, email: steve.kay at oregon.gov or call 503 986-0705

Vic Gilliam, rep.vicgilliam at state.or.us
Senator Jackie Winters, sen.jackiewinters at state.or.us

To whom it may concern:

I am writing to let you know of my support for the Silverton to Stayton Rails to Trails proposed linear park. I would like to see this property purchased by Oregon State Parks and turned into a linear park that can be used for recreation and as a non-motorized transportation corridor.

Please support this effort for Oregonians to enjoy for generations.

Thank you!

Sincerely,"
