Opening hours at the Birkenfeld Store are now limited, and they are closed some days. Call ahead (503) 755-2722 before depending on the store for food/water/bathrooms.

Several Oregon Randonneurs permanents and brevets go through Birkenfeld. West of Vernonia on Highways 47/202 and before Astoria, the only businesses/bars/stores are in Birkenfeld and Olney. 

If the Birkenfeld store is closed, a public bathroom/water stop is available at the Elk Viewpoint 1.3 miles west of the Hwy. 202/Hwy. 103 junction near Jewell (34.4 miles from Vernonia and 27.4 miles from the Hwy. 202/Hwy. 101 junction near Astoria.  The bathrooms have running water and flush toilets. They are located at the southern edge of the Elk Viewpoint parking lot in a grey building. The large brown road sign on Hwy. 202 reads: "ELK VIEWPOINT, PUBLIC RESTROOMS". Extreme caution should be used when crossing the dangerous cattle guard at the entrance to Elk Viewpoint.
