One useful way to temporarily beat the heat (and carry more
water for the looooong haul up Mount Hood) is to buy an extra
water bottle and wedge it into a jersey pocket so it radiates
coolth into your back as you sail along.
I was carrying five water bottles for the segment between
Tygh Valley and Government Camp, and I managed to empty 4 of
them and get halfway through the fifth before finishing that
segment. And it was only around 90 that day.

>> The route is challenging. ridewithgps claims 19,000 feet, but both my GPS and Vinnie's GPS registered just 16,000 (on two different pre-ride days.) Nonetheless, the route is very doable by the average randonneur. All the pre-riders finished between 24:32 and 25:11. Key to being successful at this event will be building up a time buffer in the first half of the route (outbound to Maupin with ~7500 feet) to keep yourself on track for the return trip (~8,500feet). Keep some energy in reserve for miles 205-230 which present some of the most challenging grades of the route.
>>
>> Because this is a new route, the pre-ride was critical. A huge shoutout to the volunteers who pre-rode (Vinnie, Theo, Lesli, Michal, Kevin & David) and provided us with detailed pre-ride notes, feedback and suggestions. The route is all the better because of their hard work. When you see them on Saturday and/or Sunday (you never know where their smiling faces might appear!) be sure to thank them.
>>
>> And biggest thanks of all to my intreprid co-organizer Lynne. She is a saint.
