[ORRando] Great 600 and other craziness...

I have to say that I enjoyed the first 217 miles of riding as much or more
than any other brevet. The Kings Valley area, which was new to me, is
spectacular. Slab Creek Rd is a favorite of mine and I've always liked
Ballston Rd. The weather was great. At the end of day one though, I'd had
enough and withrew.

The other reason for this post (besides saying thanks to the ride
organizers) was to point out again the value of not riding solo after dark.
Saturday night was my night for crazies. As I approached Sheridan around
1130 pm, a late model SUV pulled up beside me and 2 nicely dressed and
sincere looking young men, after apologizing for bothering me, told me they
were lost and asked for directions to Portland. No smell of booze or dope,
no snickering, just reasonable looking kids who professed to be lost. Long
story short, within a few minutes, the kid nearest me, pulled out a plastic
water bottle and from a distance of less than 3 feet, managed to hit my
head. No harm done but I certainly didn't expect that one.

Later on Ballston Rd, with not a car in slight, a car roared up behind me
and with what seemed to be about 8 bright headlights, decided to idle
directly behind me. This went on for a few hundred yards and then luckily,
I spotted a driveway to a farm house and wheeled in. The car paused for a
moment and then roared off.

I have had my share of angry drivers before but these were a new experience
for me and I thought worth a mention to this group. Be careful!
