17 riders started and 15 riders finished the Silver Falls 300 on Saturday.
The two DNFs were for mechanical failures; fortunately, volunteers were
close at hand in both instances to schlep the riders out of the wilderness.
Of the riders, 2 were women and 15 were men, and 12 rode diamond frame
bicycles while 5 were on recumbents. Temperatures were quite moderate,
which made for comfortable riding temperatures all day. However, a NxNW
wind picked up as the clouds burned off, helping the riders as they climbed
up the Clackamas River, but turning against them as they descended along the
Santiam and made their way north through the Willamette Valley.

Susan should have the official times posted on the web site before too long.

I'd like to express much gratitude to Lynne Fitzsimmons for her help with
printing and the check-in, Edna Van Gundy for staffing the secret control,
Susan France for staffing the Silver Falls control, and Cecil Reniche-Smith
for driving my tired ass back home at 1:30 AM. Thanks are also due to Bruce
and Kathy Parker for generously letting us end our ride in their front
yard. All of you that I named, thank you so much. If any of you weren't
able to pitch in, the ride is at least twice as hard for me to pull off, and
potentially the folks with mechanicals have a much harder time extricating
themselves.

Next up: the Nehalem 400, on August 23.
