Yep Lynee ... it truely is. See Joel whole writeup on the older Birkie Brevet from 06:

Riders had the option that year of taking the Banks Vernonia Trail down from Vernonia or the normal hwy 47. The trail is a wee bit longer and, well, rougher. I recall that the only riders who opted for the trail version were: Me (preride), Joel and a Seattle tandem that didn't know what they were getting into. I caught hell from that tandem..but they finished! On the otherhand the other 50 people choose to battle the hwy-47 traffic. This resulted in one instance of call to the local police to track down a local-yokal trying to run cyclists into the ditch. Needless to say, hwy-47 just isn't much fun so the route was changed to used Timber Rd in both directions... eliminating the trail as an option.

Susan.

Yes I remember stopping and rolling backwards to get the pine needles out of my fender, I remmeber getting bogged down in loose gravel, and I definately walked down the hill to cross near TopHill.

I tried it once on my Lemond (23mm tires) with fenders, and had to stop and pick the pine needles out of the fender well every so often so I could make forward progress. Much better luck on my mtb, but I suspect the Bleriot (650b) would handle it just fine. And it is a nicer climb to Tophill than the one on the road!
