Many of you subscribe to the most informative e-letter put out by
RoadBikeRider.com and know that Ed Pavelka and Fred Matheny were
training for the PAC
Tour Elite Tour.

On Day 2, June 11, Coach Fred DNF'd due to extreme heat - 107
degrees

On Day 3, about noon, Ed crashed and broke his hip near Casa Grande,
AZ. Ed
was scheduled for hip replacement surgery today.

I've known Fred & Ed since we coached together at the first PAC Tour
Desert
Camp in 1996 and I continue to coach with Fred every year and keep in
touch
with Ed at RBR. Both are great guys to ride with - I've chatted with
each this
year and know how excited they were about doing the Elite Tour.

They are strong supporters of the UMCA - Ed is currently in fifth
place in
the Year-Rounder. His friendship with John Lee Ellis goes back to
the 1991
PBP. Ed has done a terrific job of promoting the Year-Rounder, our
Records
program, and the UMCA and RAAM more generallly.

The good news is that Ed is expected to make a full recovery. More
