[OrRando] Cateye lights

Fyi;

The Cateye HL-EL-500 has been replaced by the HL-EL-530 with 50% more
light. Completely different beam shape. Priced the same at my LBS, the
el-500 should be available for 30$ vs 50$ for the el-530 if you shop
on-line. I ran the 500 side by side with the 530 upside down off my bars
for a long dark ride in september. The 500 has an inverted u shape and
the 530 is a dot. Put them together and it makes a nice beam. Run the
inverted u out front and fill it in with the bright spot up close.
Make sure and loctite the screws holding the mounts together or you may
it disassemble along about mile 85...... Especially when mounted upside
down.
A fellow rider commented that the lack of heat with the LEDs is an issue
when running in the fog, but I haven't run em in the winter yet, looks
like I'll get a chance soon.

A headlight is my next light investment...

For reflective wear one option is the RUSA sash and ankle bands, cheap,
portable and visible.

Cheers
Jon

The Cateye EL-500 is a good low-cost, high output light. I see some
riders use two of them and they're done with it. I bought two for the
price of one on Performancebike.com last year. You might check their
current sale for a deal.

When I did brevets (sigh) I became a big believer in the Petzl Duo
headlamp as recommended by Bill Bryant. Saved me a couple of times,
especially one really bad foggy night where I could shine the Petzl on
the edge of the road and follow it. Also, you can point the petzl and
see "down" the road on descents and "around" corners on curves.
