RAAM's New Ownership*

The *Race Across America*, arguably cycling's hardest event, is being sold.

The buyers are* John Hughes*, director of the UltraMarathon Cycling
Association (UMCA), and *Fred Boethling*, a RAAM record holder. They've
signed a letter of intent to purchase the race from *Lon Haldeman* and *Jim
Pitre*. Haldeman won the first RAAM (then called the Great American Bicycle
Race) in 1982 and repeated in '83.

Hughes explains that the UMCA is buying permanent rights to the race while
Boethling and his partners are buying the physical assets. The UMCA will
then license to RaceAcrossAmerica, LLC, the right to run the event for a fee
of $1 per year.

"The concept is very important -- that the UMCA controls the long-run future
of cycling's premier ultra event," says Hughes. "We are working closely with
Haldeman and Pitre to ensure that the 2007 RAAM will take place as planned."

*Terry Zmrhal*, a 15-year veteran of ultra events, will serve as race
director. He, Hughes and Boethling live in Boulder, Colorado, where the UMCA
is headquartered.
