Ride Report for ORRandonnuers, Columbia Hills 300k, August 19, 2006
--
There were 18 riders including 4 preriders, and 14 riders the day of the
event. Two riders did not finish the entire route. There was one
potential bike adjustment or over use knee injury. No accidents were
reported although one randonneur forgot their helmet at the Rowena Crest
control which technically qualified as an accidental departure. The
rider was easily identified and the forlorn helmet was returned to the
cool-headed Randonneur. The weather was sunny and visibility was
impaired because of smoke from forest fires burning in the Mt. Hood
area. Air temperatures recorded in The Dalles, OR ranged from 58.7 at
06:00 hrs to 97.4 at 16:30 hrs. The wind was calm but abruptly picked up
from the west at 16:29 hrs. The maximum recorded wind speed was 12 mph
at 17:34 hrs. By 20:00 hrs the wind dropped to 1 to 2 mph from the west
and gradually returned to calm by 21:00 hrs. Many riders wore tube socks
wet or filled with ice around the back of their necks to help keep from
overheating through the afternoon and early evening. Most riders
reported the route was challenging but commented that they enjoyed the
route and the challenge.
